Richard Samuel Amanor, the Kwaebibirem District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has urged Ghanaians to honour their tax obligations to enable government to generate more revenue for national development.
He noted that the payment of taxes and other constitutional obligations were inseparable from the enjoyment of rights and freedom.
Mr Amanor was speaking at a tax education forum organized by the NCCE in collaboration with the District Assembly, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the other tax collecting agencies at Kade.
He said the payment of tax was crucial for the development of the country and appealed to the public to endeavour to help find ways of raising government revenue if Ghana was to become a middle-income country by the year 2015.
The District Manager of the IRS, Eric Boakye reminded Ghanaians that taxation was a major source of revenue for governments worldwide.
He explained that revenue from taxes was used for the provision of infrastructure development such as roads, schools, potable water, maintenance of law and order and national security.
George Aboagye, Presiding Member of the District Assembly, urged Ghanaians to consider the payment of taxes as vital for the progress and advancement of the nation.
The Budget Officer of the District Assembly, Daniel Afari urged citizens pay basic rates and levies of assemblies to help generate revenue internally for development.
He mentioned some of the levies of the assembly as basic and property rates and fees for building permit and market tools.
