The Ghana Integrity Initiative, the local chapter of Transparency International, has chided newly elected President John Evans Atta Mills for not declaring his assets before assuming office. This according to Mr. Gilbert Sam, Programmes Officer at the Initiative is in contravention of the 1992 Constitution. The Constitution demands that all public officials declare their assets before taking office.Declaration of assets is critical in the fight against corruption, a canker President Mills has sworn to uproot in the Ghanaian society. At the IEA Presidential Debate held in November last year, President Mills pledged to declare his assets once elected into office, but appears to have reneged on that promise.Mr. Gilbert Sam told Citi News on Monday, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills and all other public officials must comply with the dictates of the constitution.A study conducted by the Ghana Integrity Initiative reveals that most public workers are not aware they have to declare their assets before taking up appointments, blaming the situation on the lack of adequate education on the issue.Gilbert Sam dismissed perceptions the declaration of assets was only limited to politicians, stressing that some civil and public servants holding key positions are also to comply with the law.Story by Nathan Gadugah
