Gold Fields Ghana, the country’s largest gold producer with mines in Tarkwa and Damang, has presented medical supplies worth over GHS34,000 to the National Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
The presentation was made by Gold Fields’ Executive Vice President and Head of West Africa, Alfred Baku, towards the treatment of surviving victims of the June 3, 2015 fire disaster which also claimed several lives and destroyed property.
The supplies, which included gauze rolls, saline infusion, disposable gloves, bandages, and several others were received on behalf of the centre by the Director of Medical Affairs of the Hospital, Dr Samuel Asiamah.
In his speech, Mr Baku expressed his personal and the company’s condolences to the families of the deceased, and pledged support for the treatment of those receiving medical care.
He said, “on this day we stand with those in pain and mourn with those who are grieving. It is our hope that the supplies we have donated today will help alleviate the suffering of our brothers and sisters, and demonstrate to the staff of the hospital that we are all willing to lend a helping hand.”
Mr Baku, who also visited the wards spoke to some of the victims, commended the doctors, nurses, and the other hospital staff for their dedication and commitment, and encouraged them to continue being a source of hope to every patient.
Apart from the donation of medical supplies, Gold Fields Ghana has also contributed GHS20,000 through the Ghana Chamber of Mines to victims of the June 3, 2015 flood and fire disaster.
Healthcare is a key focus area for Gold Fields Ghana. The company has, to date, spent over GHS5Million towards the provision of healthcare facilities in its primary stakeholder communities.
