Ghana Premier League side Dreams FC has condemned the violent acts that occurred during the game between Nsoatreman and Asante Kotoko.
The two teams faced off on matchday 19 of the top flight at the Nana Koromansah II Stadium on Sunday, 2nd February.
Unfortunate scenes unfolded during the game, leading to a brawl between players and staff from both teams. The incident also saw clashes between fans of the two clubs, resulting in the tragic death of a Kotoko supporter identified as Francis Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley.
Dreams have issued an official statement expressing condolences to Asante Kotoko and condemning the violence.
"We first and foremost wish to add our voice to the chorus of condolences and sympathies being expressed to all affected individuals, especially the deceased family and entire kumasi Asante Kotoko SC fraternity," the statement said.
"This sad development again highlights the need for a thorough review of our security and safety protocols and policing of football matches in Ghana.
"We’re encouraged by immediate steps being taken by the Ghana Police to investigate the alleged acts of criminality and bring all offenders to justice.
"We also welcome and support calls by many for a review of regulations covering such acts with a view of strengthening and to make them punitive enough for future deterrence.
"Football is a sport that brings people together, transcending differences and fostering a sense of unity. Acts of hooliganism only tarnishes the game’s reputation and creates an unsafe environment for our sport.
"This and other factors combine to rob us (clubs) of the patronage required to make the game of football a memorable and profitable venture.
"We therefore urge all supporters to embrace the spirit of the game-passionate, but respectful."
As part of frowning on the happenings from the weekend, Hearts of Oak launched an anti-hooliganism campaign, urging fans to prioritize peace and unity with a striking poster with the message “Say No to Hooliganism – We Are the Same Humans & Teams.”
