Plan International Ghana with funding from the European Union Ghana has launched the Green Skills Project in Accra.
The Green Skills Project is a three-year campaign aimed at creating livelihood opportunities for 6,000 youth and women through the promotion of local environmentally sustainable businesses.
In her welcome address, Country Director of Plan International Ghana, Madam Fadimata Alainchar called for openness and accountability on the part of partners on the project while committing to strong partnerships which will lead to strengthened outcomes.
She said, “the Green Skill Project will create livelihood opportunities for 6000 youth in the Sunyani Municipal, Ga South and Tano North District Assemblies. Let us be accountable in the work we do so that we may support the government to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals 8 and 13.”
According to the Deputy Minister for Employment and Labour Relation, Honorable Bright WirekoBrobbey, who launched the project, the project is in consonance with government’s flagship programmes which will create jobs for the youth in order to create an enabling environment that will curb migration.
He said, “The government is anchoring its efforts on public-private partnerships which will make people especially the youth, constructively engaged in order to attain the ‘Ghana beyond aid’ agenda set by the President.”
Mr Joseph Allan, a programme officer at the European Union Ghana, representing the Ambassador, indicated the European Union’s willingness to support competent NGOs like Plan International who can implement projects that will support women and the youth to achieve development.
Madam RhodalineConduah, the District Coordinating Director of Tano North, who chaired the occasion called on the youth to be patient in their business ventures and be steadfast as every milestone achieved did not come about easily.
The launch was attended by Members of Parliament for ObomDomeabra and Dormaa West, Honorable Sophia Akuokor and Honorable Halidu Ali Maiga; representatives from the Ga South Municipality, Tano North District and Sunyani Municipality Assemblies; Local NGO implementing partners : Microfin Plus Ghana, Women Integrated Development Organisation (WIDO), Plan International Ghana staff and youth from Ga South Municipality.
