The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is investigating the unauthorised occupation of the Manhyia South Sub-Metro office after concerns were raised by members during a General Assembly meeting.

The issue was brought up by the presiding member, Patrick Kwame Frimpong, at the assembly's 2026 annual action plan and composite budget meeting.

Mr. Frimpong told the house that management had received reports that a private individual had taken over the sub-metro's office and was using it to run church activities without approval from either the KMA or the sub-metro authorities.

“Our attention has been drawn to a situation where the Manhyia South Sub-Metro office has been handed over to a private person for the purpose of conducting church services. This was done without any permit or authorisation from the KMA or the Sub-Metro management,” he complained.

The presiding member expressed concern that the development has paralysed administrative work at the sub-metro.

“This is very worrying. The staff have been displaced, and when they need a place to hold meetings or attend to residents, they are compelled to rent an external facility at a cost to the Assembly,” Mr. Frimpong stated.

He said the Assembly views the act as a direct affront to public property and local governance structures.

To address the matter, Mr. Frimpong announced that a committee has been tasked to investigate how the office was released to the individual and to identify all persons involved.

The Assembly has further directed the administration to immediately evict the occupant and restore the facility to its intended purpose.

“We have set up a committee to conduct a thorough investigation and report back to the General Assembly. In the meantime, we have directed the immediate eviction of the occupant to restore the facility to its intended use,” he added.

Some Assembly members who contributed to discussions alleged that such takeovers are common whenever there is a change in government.

“This is not the first time we are seeing this. Anytime there is a change in government, some party members take over public facilities and use them for private purposes,” one member said.

Other members called for stringent sanctions against anyone found culpable, regardless of political affiliation.

Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyeman-Boadi acknowledged the concerns raised by the assembly and assured that steps will be taken to eject the occupant.

He added that disciplinary and legal action will be pursued based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.

KMA says it remains committed to protecting public assets and ensuring that all Sub-Metro offices are used solely for official business.
