Yilo Krobo Senior High School has secured qualification to the National Championship of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) after staging a remarkable comeback to defeat Presby Senior High Technical School, Aburi, in the Eastern Regional qualifiers.
The contest, which featured intense competition among five schools, saw Yilo Krobo SHS and Aburi Presby SHTS battle closely for the qualification slot, with both teams taking turns at the top of the scoreboard.
Aburi Presby SHTS entered the third round with the advantage after scoring 34 points, narrowly leading Yilo Krobo SHS, who had 31 points.
The two schools had separated themselves from the rest of the field, with Presby SHS, Kraboa-Coaltar and Akroso SHTS each recording 10 points at that stage.
However, Yilo Krobo SHS responded strongly in the next round, producing a comeback that changed the direction of the contest.
The school moved into the lead with 47 points, while Aburi Presby SHTS remained within touching distance on 44 points, setting up a tense final stage.
Maintaining their composure under pressure, Yilo Krobo SHS extended their advantage in the closing round to finish with 53 points and secure the Eastern Region qualification slot.
Aburi Presby SHTS ended the contest with 47 points, but their performance gives them an opportunity to progress as one of the top 30 runner-up schools.
Presby SHS, Kraboa-Coaltar and Akroso SHTS completed the standings with 26 points and 14 points respectively.
The victory adds to Yilo Krobo SHS’s growing reputation in the NSMQ competition and places the school among the representatives from the Eastern Region expected to compete at the national stage.
