Two individuals have been shot dead in Atuba, a suburb of the Binduri District in the Upper East Region, in what is suspected to be linked to the ongoing Bawku conflict.
The tragic incident has heightened tensions in the area as concerns grow over the persistent violence.
The attack occurred on Monday, 17th March 2025, when unidentified gunmen on motorbikes stormed a bustling marketplace and opened fire on traders.
The victims were killed instantly, sending shockwaves through the local community.
The deceased have been identified as Mohammed, a veterinary officer, and a local pastor. Although the assailants remain unidentified, many believe the attack forms part of the long-standing conflict that has plagued Bawku and its surrounding areas.
While the motive behind the latest killings has not been officially confirmed, the attack adds to the growing number of casualties linked to the protracted unrest.
Since the conflict resurfaced in October 2024, the death toll has risen to approximately 76, highlighting the urgent need for a resolution.
In response to the worsening situation, top Ghanaian leaders, including the Asantehene, continue to engage in mediation efforts aimed at restoring peace.
Authorities have also urged all factions to exercise restraint while security forces intensify efforts to maintain law and order.
