The Ghana Water Company has introduced a test kit to help check and ascertain the quality of water in communities.

It gives backing for consumers to report to their local assemblies for immediate action if the test shows that the quality of their water has been compromised.

Communities, especially those in the mining areas stand to benefit more with the introduction of this test kit since their water bodies suffer a lot of pollution due to the use of some chemicals that are considered harmful to human consumption.

It is currently being piloted in selected communities in the Ashanti and Greater Accra Regions.

According to the Ghana Water Company, the tool known as World Water Monitoring Challenge test kit, has been introduced to involve the general public in its water resource management.

Chief Manager, Quality Assurance of the Water Company, Jonas Jablor said the kit will help in preventing several water borne diseases.

"The test kits are basically for monitoring water in our environment...this equipment is able to give us just how polluted the water in the environment is," Mr. Jablor told Joy News' Seth Kwame Boateng.

Mr. Jablor said the water company is targeting school children within some communities in the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions because, "they are more influential" and useful in preaching issues of behavioural change.
