Hearts v Kotoko – Who has the more expensive squad?

On Sunday, Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko will take to the field to open a new chapter on the Super Clash.

The two teams have enjoyed the most success stories in domestic competitions since their respective inceptions.

For decades, the rivalry between arguably Ghana’s two biggest clubs have burned bright with various arguments from fans about who the better club is in the country.

Ahead of the weekend, Joy Sports are settling a part of the debate; the team with the more expensive squad according to Transfermarkt.

Goalkeepers

This position is one of Kotoko’s strongholds. The Porcupine Warriors have four goalkeepers who have gained experience on the national stage.

Felix Annan has trained with the Black Stars in the past, Razak Abalora currently features for the senior national team, Kwame Baah played for the Black Meteors in 2019 and Ibrahim Danlad currently captains the Black Satellites.

Abalora and Felix Annan are joint highest in value here with a figure of €100,000 (GHS 697,490.35) each. Kotoko’s goalkeepers have an average age of 22.5 years and a total value of €350,000 (GHS 2,441,280.68).

Hearts of Oak also have four goalkeepers who have an average age of 25.25 years. Richard Attah and Richmond Ayi have featured often this season for the Phobians.

Richard Attah, who is valued at €100,000 (GHS 697,490.35) is the most valuable Hearts shot stopper.

The goalkeepers in Hearts have a total value of €200,000 (GHS 1,395,201.63) which makes Kotoko winners in this position.

Defence

Kotoko wins this department as well. They have some pretty good options here. Yussif Mubarik, Habib Mohammed and Ismail Ganiyu have proven capable at center back whilst the likes of Imoro Ibrahim and Christopher Nettey are doing good jobs as full backs.

Habib Mohammed, who is valued at €125,000 (GHS 871,993.83), has the highest value among Kotoko’s defenders. Nine Kotoko defenders have been listed by Transfermarkt with an average age of 23 years and have a combined value of €650,000 (GHS 4,534,367.91).

Hearts also have good options in defence but have a lower value overall. Mohammed Alhassan, Nuru Sulley and Robert Addo are good center backs.

At the full back position, Fatawu Mohammed heads it as captain whilst the likes of Raddy Ovouka, Larry Sumaila and William Dankyi provide competition.

Nuru Sulley and Raddy Ovouka are valued at €125,000 (GHS 871,993.83) each, the highest in the defensive setup of Hearts.

Eight defenders were listed for Hearts with an average age of 25 years. €575,000 (GHS 4,011,204.70) is their current value in total.

Midfield

This department goes to Hearts of Oak. They have a relatively stacked midfield which includes Emmanuel Nettey, Abdul Manaf Umar, Frederick Ansah Botchway, Kwadwo Obeng Junior and others.

None of the midfielders in the squad are valued above €75,000 (GHS 523,183.35). The midfield have an average age 23.80 years with a total value of €625,000 (GHS 4,359,969.15).

Kotoko’s introduction of Fabio Gama has proven astute. However, some additional quality is needed in that area. Abdul Latif Anabila, Emmanuel Keyekeh and Mudasiru Salifu are some of the well-known names in the middle of the park.

Sulley Muniru was added to the squad before the season began but Kotoko terminated his contract shortly afterwards. Fabio Gama is valued at €100,000 (GHS 697,490.35), the highest among Kotoko’s midfielders.

With an average age of 24.38 years, Kotoko’s midfielders combine for €475,000 (GHS 3,313,576.55) in value.

Attack

Kotoko, for the third time, wins in this department. Abdul Gazale’s side allowed William Opoku Mensah to run down his contract but still have some good options upfront.

Kwame Opoku, who has been one of the deadliest strikers in the league this season, leads the valuation with €125,000 (GHS 871,993.83). Naby Keita, Ibrahim Osman and Emmanuel Gyamfi and Evans Adomako complete the side’s forward lineup.

Their combined value is €375,000 (GHS 2,615,550.00) with an average age of 23 years.

Seven forwards are listed in Hearts of Oak’s books according to Transfermarkt. Those forwards have an average age of 23.43 years and a combined market value of €350,000 (GHS 2,441,868.66).

Victor Aidoo has been one of the side’s stars recently. The Accra-based side can also call on Patrick Razak, Isaac Afriyie and Isaac Mensah among others to deliver. Patrick Razak is valued at €100,000 (GHS 697,490.35), the highest among Hearts forwards.

Total value

Asante Kotoko are overall winners in the valuation. The Kumasi-based side have a total squad value of €1.85 million (GHS 12,906,083.42) compared to Hearts’ €1.75 million (GHS 12,206,906.80).

With a total average age of 23.35 years, Kotoko possesses a younger squad than Hearts of Oak (24.24 years).

These values will be set aside when these two sides clash on Sunday.
