Government has assured it is working hard to ease traffic congestion caused by ongoing road construction projects in various parts of the capital, Accra.
By December, the heavy traffic situation would reduce as measures are underway to deal with the problem.
Officials of the Roads and Information ministries Friday took journalists to selected construction sites to inspect progress of work.
Joy FM’s Cyrus deGraft-Johnson joined the team and reported that people living in areas in the capital where there are ongoing road construction projects are very worried about the heavy vehicular traffic they have to contend with on a daily basis.
He said some are angry that they have to spend several hours in traffic to and from work.
Residents who live in or around Teshie Nungua, Adenta, Achimota, Mallam and Spintex, are the worst affected.
But Deputy Information Minister, James Agyenim Boateng says very soon people’s pain will be soothed.
Cyrus deGraft Johnson said the tour took the team to Mallam Junction, a major gridlock spot in Accra. A consultant working on the road there, Samuel Danso Asare said everything was being done to ease traffic without interrupting the construction works.
Dansoman Roads are in a bad shape, motorists are forced to drive slowly to avoid damaging their cars on the street full of potholes. This compounds the traffic there.
But Accra Mayor, Alfred Vanderpuje said inner lanes were being designed to try and ease the situation there.
At the Spintex Road where work has been ongoing for months now, the Metro Roads Engineer, Abass Awulu said the project should be completed in December this year.
It has been over two years since the contract to expand the La-Teshie beach road up to the Kofi Annan Peacekeeping Training Centre into a dual carriage way was awarded. Vigorous work however started only a few months ago.
Deputy Roads Minister, Dr. Oakley Quaye Kumah says the contractor will lose the job if he fails to meet the deadline given him to complete the project.
