The Deputy Minister designate for Trade and Industry Nii Lante Vandepuye, has debunked claims that he is a lawless person whose appointment was nothing short of "a square peg in a round hole". He was speaking during his vetting at the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Tuesday. The former Division One player said President Mahama was best situated to identify and attest to qualities that made him suitable for the Trade and Industry ministry. He said the President is "the coach of the team" has worked with him for sometime. "If you have abilities in sports it helps you to function anywhere at all. You have organisational skills, you have commitment and you have that die-hard spirit so I am very sure I will be taking these qualities to the ministry". The Deputy Minister designate who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Odododiodoo constituency also reacted to perceptions that he had created in his constituency "a kingdom and a no-go area where nobody crossed his path". He said it was an unfair perception. "I am not a lawless person and I try to be on the side of the law but I am one person who will not allow wanton disregard for the law. I have never had any record of violence. I have always been misconstrued", he said. He revealed that the meaning of his name "Edwin" was a "friendly person" and that people who met him in parliament were pleasantly surprised by his gentle demeanour. He traced this negative perception to the biometric registration exercise in 2012 where as an aspirant he prevented people he believed were bussed in from outside the constituency and the Greater Accra Region to register. The former aide to the late President Mills said the electoral regulation required that a voter must be resident in the area he was registering. He said that his actions were vindicated because over 2,000 of those challenged had their registration cancelled at the courts and lost on appeal. "There was no way I was going to allow people to break the law."
