Following the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic, most companies adopted the working from home module to ensure business continuity.
However, this pivotal feature of the pandemic may have caused some people severe pain, particularly one that affects the spinal cord as they either work on their beds, the floor, or in their couch.
As the Covid-19 continues to rage in many countries, and variants are complicating the picture, the CEO of Nova Wellness Centre has shared some ways to help protect your spine if you are working from home.
Dr Naa Asheley Dordor, speaking with JoyNews’ Animwaa Addo, in an interview, noted that all one needs to do is to create a simple workspace at home.
“When I say workspace, I’m not talking about a full ergonomic chair, excellent table. If you have a simple dining set table and chair, that could be a very good starting point,” she said.
She added that one could also use some pillows “to support yourself,” and in a case where one is unable to get “a desktop-like you would have in your office, you just need some notebooks to put under your laptop” to elevate it and that helps to improve your posture.
“So simple things, you don’t need fancy things and then you need to make sure that maybe, every 45 minutes, you take a water break, every 30 minutes, you take your eyes off the monitor so that you can reduce your stress level,” she advised.
Another great way to reduce back pain, she noted, is exercising, “there is the cardio, which is we are running or we are jogging, there’s the strengthening exercising like your sit up scorch strengthening and all that.”
There are also stretches, which are excellent ways of reducing muscle tension to strengthen the weak muscles, especially in the early phases of back pain.
“So that’s why it becomes so important that people don’t wait till they realize they cannot walk, or they cannot get up from bed before they want to solve their back pain,” she explained.
According to Dr Dordor, the earlier attention is given to back pain, the better, as sometimes it just needs simple exercises which could provide a lot of relief that is needed.
“You need to take care of your spine, it’s the framework of your entire body so if that framework is out, nothing else works.
“So sit well, stay mobile and make sure your spine is in perfect shape,” she encouraged.
