The Ghana Immigration Service is not an avenue for corruption, and anyone desirous of joining the Service to enrich himself or herself overnight, should repent now, or forget it, Deputy Minister for the Interior, Kwabena Acheampong, has warned. "Those among you, who erroneously think that the Ghana Immigration Service is a conceptualised Eldorado or gold mining organisation, are better advised here and now, to advise themselves before they get caught on the wrong side of the law. A word to the wise is enough." Mr. Acheampong made this observation on Friday, when he reviewed a parade of the passing out ceremony of 270 new recruits, made up of 192 males and 76 females, into the Ghana Immigration Service at the Vigilance Square, Assin Fosu. He urged the new recruits to be highly disciplined in their daily duties, and not compromise on their professional ethics, since the career they had chosen was very demanding and challenging. "Professionalism of the highest standard," he noted "should be your watchword and trademark." The new recruits, The Chronicle learnt, underwent a four-month intensive training programme, during which they were taken through courses like Documents Processing, Disciplinary Orders, First Aid & Physical Education, International Relations, Basic Intelligence, Professional Ethics, Border Operations, Enforcement Duties, Conditions for Entry & Exit, Conditions of Service, Cross Border Crimes, Human Trafficking, Document Fraud Detection, GIS Establishment History, Report Writing, Basic Office Practice, ECOWAS Protocol, Client Career Duties, ICT, Psychology & Management, and Communication. They would be on a year-long probation, during which period their ability and competence in the service will be critically examined and evaluated. Those who do not make the grade, Mr. Acheampong said, "would be shown the exit at the end of the probation period." Prizes were given to deserving recruits excelled during the period of their training. The Best Award in PT went to Emmanuel Amenyo Hiswils, while Amenuku Courage emerged Best in Drills, Male Category, with the female Category going to Abigail Akowuah. Jacob Ganyo, came tops in Best in Obstacle Crossing, with Daniel Tettey Nanor emerging as Most Disciplined Recruit. Pascaline Esi Sitsofe Atsu emerged Best in Academics, as well as Overall Best Recruit. Commenting further, Mr Acheampong urged the new recruits to use the knowledge and skills acquired to protect the country’s various entry points, since the West Africa sub region had had been bedeviled with issues of irregular migration, border insecurity, wars and civil strike, smuggling of small arms, human trafficking and the abuse of women and children. The aforementioned problems, Mr. Acheampong noted, had multiple dimensions with corresponding negative consequences on society.
