The Director General of the Internal Audit Agency, Dr Eric Oduro Osae has emphasised the urgent need to revamp the internal auditing system to effectively curb irregularities within public sector institutions.
Dr Oduro Osae suggested that the solution lies in "going back to basics," focusing on enhancing the control systems already in place, and ensuring that internal auditors are given the resources and support they need to perform their duties effectively.
"I think we should go back to basics, strengthen the control system, resource the internal auditors well and they will do magic," he suggested
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, February 24, he argued that internal auditors are on the frontline of identifying and preventing financial misconduct, yet their conditions of service are among the worst in the sector.
"As we speak, the conditions of service for internal auditors are one of the worst across the chain," Oduro Osae pointed out.
He added, "But these are people who are at the forefront of preventing the irregularities, if they go hungry what do you think will happen?"
He stressed that these issues could be mitigated if internal auditors were given the proper resources, training, and incentives to fulfill their roles effectively.
He called for a reevaluation of existing laws that govern internal audits, suggesting that they need to be "re-tweaked" to remain relevant in the face of changing economic and organizational landscapes.
"Restructure internal audit, re-tweak the law, make it relevant, resource internal auditors, and I tell you, we will not see some of these irregularities happening," he mentioned.
