Knowing the punishment awaiting him for his action, Stephen Sodzi, the 34 year old mason who allegedly set his estranged wife, Rose Abansa ablaze with the intention of killing her has committed suicide in police cells.
The Chronicle, on Friday July 2nd, 2010, carried a story of a jealous husband setting his wife ablaze, accusing her of unfaithfulness. Sodzi was reported to have gone to the house of his former wife in the wee hours of Monday, June 28th, 2010, poured petrol around the house and set it ablaze at a time the wife was fast asleep.
Upon a complaint made to the Tafo police by relatives of the victim, the late Sodzi was arrested and detained to pave way for investigations.
However, the late Sodzi, knowing very well the sort of punishment awaiting him for his actions, decided to commit suicide whilst in police cells last Friday.
Confirming the incident to journalists, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) in charge of the Eastern Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Yaw Nketia-Yeboah, stated that the police man on duty on that fateful day heard an unusual noise in the cells where the late Sodzi was being held. When he opened the door, he saw the suspect in a pool of blood. The suspect was quickly rushed to hospital where he died later.
The police PRO said that prior to the incident, a relative of the deceased came to the police station to give him a bottle of coke and meat pie, which was subsequently checked by the police man on duty to ensure that there was no foreign substance in it.
Chief Inspector Nketia-Yeboah believes that the late Sodzi might have used the bottle after drinking the coke to commit the suicide. The body has been deposited in the Tafo Government Hospital morgue for autopsy.
