As part of Ghana month, Joy FM has tested the local language proficiency of some Ghanaian students. The heavy use of English, which is Ghana’s official language, has over the decades raised fears Ghanaian identity as expressed in indigenous languages, is under serious threat.
Some four students who did not appear to have a problem with this threat showed their ability to read their local language with such refreshing flawlessness.
Jessica Naa Atswei Lomo, 11 years, Phoebe Ama Adomah Agyei, 11yrs, Elikplim Dziwornu Afelike-Caleb, 10yrs and Naa Oboshie Torgbor, 10yrs, left their judges, Adom News editor Afia Pokuaa and Joy News Sports presenter Gary Al-Smit, stunned.
