Tension was visible at the Bantema constituency executive election re-run at the Kumasi Culture Centre after the incumbent NPP Chairman, Fiifi Mensah, allegedly snubbed the area’s Member of Parliament, Francis Asenso-Boakye, during exchange of pleasantries.
In a video captured by JoyNews and circulated on social media, Mr Mensah was seen moving through the voting centers exchanging handshakes with delegates.
However, when he got to where the MP was seated, he bypassed him and continued greeting other delegates without acknowledging the MP.
The incident occurred shortly before proceedings began for the re-run of the constituency executive election.
Eyewitnesses at the venue said the Chairman’s action drew murmurs from delegates, with some describing it as “unfortunate” given the need for unity within the party ahead of future elections.
Both Mr Mensah and Mr. Asenso-Boakye were present for the exercise, which is being supervised by the Electoral Commission and representatives from the regional and national executives.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Chairman nor the MP had commented publicly on the incident.
Sources allege that the current Bantema Constituency Vice Chairman, Kingsley Atta, is being supported by the MP in a bid to unseat the incumbent Chairman.
Some party members believe this internal contest may have influenced the Chairman’s decision to snub the MP during the greetings.
