Ken Attafuah, lead Counsel for Amina Mohammed in the alleged mass rape and robbery case has described Michael Frimpong, initially a prospective defence witness-turned prosecution witness as somebody who is suffering from mental ill health. Prof Attafuah noted that from the onset, Michael did not prove to be a trustworthy person that is why the defense counsel refused to include him (Frimpong) in the defense team. Professor Attafuah stressed that after cross examining Frimpong, it came out that he was a ‘gold digger’ who would stop at nothing to destroy people’s reputation. Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Monday, Prof Attafuah said he will not spend a penny on somebody to give false account on Amina’s case. Prof Attafuah noted that a court in this case had earlier asked that Michael Frimpong be taken to a psychiatric hospital because he had been providing conflicting accounts on the case, and wondered why Frimpong was allowed to come to court and testify in the case. Michael Frimpong, initially a suspect in the case, was last Friday testifying as a prosecution witness in the case in which Amina Mohammed, a hairdresser, is being tried for publishing false news with the intent to cause fear and panic and deceiving a public office. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Amina was seized by police officers after she alleged on a couple of radio stations that some armed men had attacked a bus on which she travelled and forced passengers to have sex. Frimpong had emerged to corroborate Amina's account, but on Friday she emerged as a prosecution witness and named three bigwigs of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Prof Ken Attafuah and Adakabre Frimpong Manso of Adom FM as the brains behind the story and that he had been promised the sum of GHS90,000 to corroborate Amina’s claims. But Prof Ken Attafuah said what happened in court on Friday was a sad commentary for Ghana’s jurisprudence, describing the testimony as a complete fabrication and accused the prosecution of masterminding the act. According to him, he met the witness on the day he had secured bail for Amina and he (Frimpong) confessed to have been one of the passengers aboard the Yutong bus. Attafuah said he had a call several weeks later from the same man who claimed to have been tortured by the police over the same matter and was languishing in cells. He said he instructed his colleague - Appiah Kubi to secure bail for him purely on humanitarian grounds and his belief in human rights and civil liberties.
