The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has signed an agreement with transport unions to restrain commercial vehicles from loading outside designated terminals.
Operators who breach the deal will be prosecuted as part of security clamp down on traders and commercial drivers at unauthorized areas at the Central business district.
It comes as some traders threaten a demonstration to call for the removal of City Mayor, Osei Assibey Antwi, over the decongestion exercise.
But at a crunch meeting on Monday, however, stakeholders endorsed enforcement of by-laws to rid the city centre of undesired activities.
Twenty transport unions attended the meeting and signed the pact with KMA to ensure, among others, all commercial transporters come under one body.
Commercial vehicles have been assigned to designated transport terminals for their operation.
Picking and dropping passengers at places like Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Santase and Suame Roundabout are prohibited.
City Mayor, Osei Assibey Antwi explains offenders are liable for prosecution.
“This is not the first time we are doing this but this time they have come to sign and we have added a lot of clauses to it. They have signed to that effect,” he added.
Some union executives agree the move will decongest the city.
“We all want the city to be clean and also the street to be free. We will talk to our people to adhere to this directive,” says Eric Assibey, a concerned transport operator.
