Asante Kotoko finally defeated AshantiGold for the first time this year on the 5th attempt in the MTN FA Cup on Wednesday.
The FA Cup holders put behind their woes in the Ghana Premier League by defeating the Miners 2-0 in their quarterfinals clash held at the Baba Yara Stadium.
Midfielder Jackson Owusu opened the scoring from a corner in the 41st minute with his debut goal for the club since joining in January. A scramble of a goal it was as centre-back Abeiku Ainooson’s goal-bound header had goalkeeper struggle to clear with Jackson available to ensure his final touch give Kotoko the lead.
Right-back Atta Kusi doubled the lead with a beauty in the 66th minute. Kusi, also scoring his first Kotoko goal, had found himself in the AshGold half and fed onto a pass from Jackson, turned AshGold left-back Tijani Joshua in-and-out before releasing a shot across goal which beautifully went past substitute goalkeeper Nana Bonsu.
AshGold had Osei Baffour sent off in the first half while goalkeeper Robert Dabuo failed to continue the game after coming off worse from crushing into Amed Toure late on in the first half. The win is Kotoko’s first over the Miners after losing thrice on the trot in pre-season competitions and in the first round of the FCPPL.
Asante Kotoko advance to the semifinals to face Aduana Stars who also came out victors in a five-goal thriller with lower tier side Eleven Wise at the Dormaa Park.
Right-back Godfred Saka gave Aduana a 1-0 half time lead before Daniel Darkwah and Isaac Amankwaah added two more goals in the second half to make it 3-0. Eleven Wise turned the pressure on their hosts as they got two late goals but that could not survive them in the competition.
Asante Kotoko will host Aduana Stars in the first semifinals game of the 2015 MTN FA Cup at the Baba Yara Stadium on July 21.
