The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive says he is determined to ensure that the Ashanti Regional capital does not become the centre of anti-government agitations. Mr. Samuel Sarpong is displeased that the city has played host to some recent demonstrations such as that of pressure group Alliance For Accountable Governance (AFAG), nurses, NDC activists and Prison Service officers. Mr. Sarpong insists he will reverse the trend because of the potential security problems such agitations pose. “We are calling the attention of all Ghanaians that we will not sit down and allow Kumasi to be used as a demonstration ground,” he stated. He said while he may not have the power to restrict people from demonstrating, he will insist that whoever wishes to demonstrate must follow the rules and regulations guiding street protests. On his part, Ashanti Regional Police PRO, Chief Inspector Mohammed Tanko said the police’s duty is to ensure that all those seeking to demonstrate, follow the appropriate procedures. He said it is proper to notify the police because adequate human and logistical resources are usually required to provide the demonstrators with security. Meanwhile, the Alliance for Accountable Governance -AFAG, the pressure group that recently took one of its demonstrations to Kumasi has challenged Mr. Samuel Sarpong's right to curtail the intensity of demonstrations in his city.
