Former Black Stars coach C.K. Akonnor has revealed that the perception of a friendship between him and GFA president, Kurt Okraku is far from reality.
Speaking on the Super Morning Show on Joy FM, Akonnor reflected on his turbulent tenure as head coach of Ghana's national football team and the challenges he faced during his time in charge.
"A lot of people think Kurt [GFA President] was my friend, but it’s the opposite," Akonnor stated. "I didn’t have the necessary support I needed from him, and of course, the entire FA weren’t too happy with my work. Eventually, they got rid of me."
The former coach’s revelations come in the wake of the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, sparking widespread criticism of Ghanaian football’s management.
Akonnor attributed some of his struggles to a lack of institutional backing, which he described as a significant obstacle to achieving success during his tenure.
"I don’t think they gave me the support that I wanted. It was difficult for me," he said.
The former Asante Kotoko and AshGold coach refrained from critiquing Otto Addo’s recent tenure, acknowledging that the challenges each coach faced were unique.
He cited the COVID-19 pandemic as a major setback during his time with the team, adding that the circumstances made his job particularly challenging.
"It’s not fair to compare my time to Otto Addo’s. The terms were different, and we faced different problems," Akonnor explained.
Black Stars failed to qualify to the AFCON for the first time in 21 years.
