Inequitable distribution of health facilities coupled with unqualified personnel and inappropriate infrastructure at the Ellembelle District is leading to maternal and child deaths. District Director of Health Services, Mrs Elizabeth Corney, who made this known, said it is incumbent on the government to reverse the situation to safe lives. Mrs Corney made the revelation when she gave an overview of the health situation in the district at the launch of the Ellembelle Mobile Clinic at Esiama in the Western Region. According to her, the district has taken pragmatic measures to reduce maternal deaths from seven in May 2009, to two in May this year. Mrs Corney said malaria remained the leading cause of morbidity in the district in 2009. She added that there are no refrigerators in any of the health centres in the area thereby bringing immunization activities to a halt. She, therefore, appealed to public-spirited individuals and organisations to come to the aid of the district. The Acting Regional Director of Health Services, Dr Kweku Kakari, said Ghana could not achieve the Millennium Development Goals if the citizenry are not in good health. He noted that sustainable health among the people would increase the Gross Domestic Product and prolong their lifespan in order to contribute meaningfully to national development. Source: GNA
