A large crowd Tuesday thronged the premises of the Fast Track High Courts in Accra as the Ya Na murder trial opened under a new judge.14 persons have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder whiles one person, who is at large is facing a murder charge.According to Joy News' Cyrus deGraft-Johnson the crowd of Andani and Abudus wanted to be part of the hearing at all cost, but the police denied many of them entry into the courtroom because there was very limited space in there.The trial was to start previously in a different court presided Justice Anthony Oppong who had to recuse himself under controversial circumstances when the prosecution alleged he had made comments prejudicial to the case at a drinking bar. He denied the charge before recusing himself.The Chief Justice then re-assigned the case to Justice E.K. Ayebi, a Court of Appeal judge with additional responsibility as a High Court Judge, who heard the case for the first time Tuesday.Director of Public Prosecutions, Gertrude Aikins took over from Rexford Wiredu who had been handling the case.She was ready to call her first key witness but the trial had to be adjourned to Thursday September 9 because an interpreter who was engaged to help 10 of the 14 accused persons who told the court they do not understand or speak English, was not proficient in the language of the accused persons – Dagbani.A seven member jury has been sworn in and warned not to have any contact with any of the parties in the case.Story by Cyrus deGraft-Johnson/Joy FM/Ghana
