From afar, you will see them as just decorative lights, but they did not only beautify the Nima Roundabout and some parts of Tamale.

They were magnets, attracting and bringing families together for memorable pictures during the Eid ul-Fitr celebrations.

Light Up the City which has become a major feature of Christmas in December, made a return in April for the Muslim Eid celebrations.
The Nima roundabout is still adorned with lights—glittering from a distance, its attraction simply irresistible.

A mother and Nima resident, Jamila Sofian says she did not have to spend any money to go out of town for a good spot to take pictures. She wants the lights back next year.

“The place is looking so beautiful and marvelous. I was passing by yesterday when I saw the decoration. I was so impressed. This is the first time I have seen something like this. It is very nice so I decided to bring my children to have a look. “

Jamila says she liked the creativity of the design.

“ I like the natural things like the moon and the stars. I want to say kudos to them for their hard work and the beautiful decoration they have done for our community during the Eid celebrations. We wish they will be doing it more often, every year.”

Jamila was not the only one at the Nima Roundabout with her family.

Nurudeen Hussein was also there with his children and wife.

He says he only saw the lights during Christmas and other Christian festive occasions.

He is happy the Muslim community is also getting its fair share of the joy the lights carry to every community and neigbourhood.

He said “I like creativity and the arts. This is the first time I am seeing it in our community. I have been seeing it during Christmas but I do not see it during Muslim festive occasions. So I decided to bring my family around. I want to document the memories. I have so many pictures on my phone. We are looking for more to make our celebrations memorable.”

Nurudeen’s son, Fawaz Hussein was also thrilled by the different designs he saw.

He said, “I love the lights. I always come here with my friends to come and have fun."

CEO OF Jandel Limited, Madam Afi Amoro transformed the Nima Roundabout and some parts of Tamale with lights.

She was supported by Ecobank, the Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly, and the Afro-Arab Group.

Afi Amoro says she sees it as a duty to always bring joy to communities during festive occasions.
