ECOWAS chairman, President John Dramani Mahama is heading to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso to meet all the stakeholders following the ousting of President Blasie Compaore from power last Friday.

The military has taken over after mass protest ended the 27-year rule of President Blaise Compaore. The soldiers have promised a civilian-led transitional government would be established as quickly as possible.

The African Union (AU) has given Burkina Faso's military a two-week deadline to hand power to a civilian ruler or face sanctions.

ECOWAS in a statement issued by President Mahama has also warned it will not accept any take over through unconstitutional means. 

President Mahama will now visit Ghana's northern neighbour after receiving a report from a Joint Mission of ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations that was sent to Burkina Faso to study the politically volatile situation. The Mission, which was in that country from October 30, returned to brief President Mahama last Sunday, before returning to Ouagadougou on Monday. 

President Mahama approved the recommendations of the Joint Mission and reaffirmed the subregional group, ECOWAS' support for a peaceful restoration of constitutional order. He has also been engaging with the stakeholders including the military and called for a consensual solution in line with the provisions of the constitution of Burkina Faso. 

President Mahama has invited two of his colleagues, President Macky Sall of Senegal and President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria to join him on the Mission to Burkina Faso today. 

ECOWAS has assured Burkina Faso of its readiness to work with them to restore legitimate transitional order and finding sustainable solutions to the impasse and work towards organizing free and credible elections. 

President Mahama will return home later today.
