The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, on Tuesday, February 4, appealed to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to reconsider his decision regarding the suspension of four Members of Parliament.
"I invite you, Mr Speaker, to reconsider the decision you communicated to the House," Afenyo-Markin said.
The Majority leader, Mahama Ayariga, also supported the appeal, asking the Speaker to lift the suspension and allow the affected MPs to rejoin their colleagues.
The Speaker eventually agreed and lifted the ban not only based on the plea on the floor of Parliament, but also based on discussions and assurances behind the scenes before Tuesday's sitting.
The suspended MPs include the two chief Whips for both the Minority and Majority caucuses, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor and Frank Annoh-Dompreh, as well as Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib.
The suspension was made in light of the disorder that occurred during the vetting of ministerial nominees, which disrupted the smooth conduct of the Appointment Committee’s work. Tables and microphones were broken in the process, with some MPs nearly engaging blows.
Despite the withdrawal of the suspension, the Speaker said the investigative committee will go ahead with its work and present a report that will guide the House going forward.
