A comment considered derogatory by a policeman has resulted in the shooting of a youth at Juaso in the Asante-Akim South District of Ashanti.
The youth, Victor Agyemang, was said to have commented that police at Juaso were snatching the girlfriends of boys in the town and had capped it with the theft of a mobile phone.
The policeman, only known as Christian, overheard Agyemang's comment and confronted him. In the ensuing exchanges, the policeman allegedly opened fire, and shot Agyemang in the knee. He is on admission at the Juaso Government Hospital.
Corporal Godwin Ahianyo, of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, confirmed the incident and said the command had launched an investigation into it.
He said the incident took place at about 1 pm near the Ghana Commercial Bank in the town.
He will not give details, but the Times gathered that it all started on August 7, at the funeral at Juaso of the in-law of Mr. Kennedy Agyapong, MP for Assin North.
The funeral was attended by many people, including boxing legend, Azumah Nelson, comedian Super O.D and other celebrities and Azumah Nelson was said to have gone to the precincts of the Commercial Bank to have photographs of he and some friends taken.
In the process, Super O.D, who was one of those taking the photographs allegedly lost his mobile phone at the place. A labourer who was later cleaning the compound of the bank that same day was said to have found the phone in some flowers.
Three days after the funeral, the labourer allegedly heard on the public address system in the town of the announcement of a missing mobile telephone and informed the announcer that he found the phone but it was collected from him by a policeman who promised to return it to the owner.
It was this turn of events that compelled Agyemang to make the said comment which triggered the shooting.
