The NDC's Ketu South parliamentary candidate, Dzifa Gomashie says the military cannot deter members of the constituency from exercising their rights to register for the December polls.

Her comments come after government deployed some military personnel at Ketu South to prevent foreigners from entering.

Government said the move is to prevent the importation of Covid-19 into the country.

But the parliamentary candidate who believes the action by the government is to intimidate members of the constituency and prevent them from exercising their franchise, said although the military may be feared by many, this will not deter constituents from partaking the 2020 general elections.

“The uniform of the Ghana Armed Forces is one that I will respect for the rest of my life because I was born among them but that will not deter me from exercising my constitutional right,” she said at a Presser on Monday.

Military troops were deployed days ago in a programme the Volta Regional Minister Archibald Letsa said is part of measures to control Covid-19 importation into Ghana.

He said the security personnel are to ensure that the borders remain protected.

However, governing New Patriotic Party MP for Adansi Asokwa K.T. Hammond said the soldiers have been deployed to ensure that foreigners to do not register in the upcoming voters register compilation.

The aspiring MP nonetheless also says the Military deployment is only a ploy by the government to deter eligible voters of the Ketu South Constituency from exercising their franchise in the upcoming elections and this she says is unacceptable.

 “Unfortunately not many people have the benefit that I have of being born in the barracks so when they see the uniform of the military they will be terrified and that is why I am speaking up.

"I am speaking up because the government is terrifying people in this constituency which don’t deserve that."

She further asked President Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party in general, to change the dynamics of their politics.

According to her the NPP's politics has been characterized by intimidation and that is not healthy for the democracy of the country.

“I call on his Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo to do the right thing by the people of the Ketu South and do the right thing by the people of the Volta Region and Ghana,” she said.
