MP for Kpone-Katamanso and Minister of State at the Office of the President, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, has called for an in-depth investigations into allegations that some members of parliament are homosexuals, an allegation put out by the Deputy Coordinator of the National Youth Council.
Prince Derrick Adjei, who said he is also a member of the government’s communications team, Monday caused a stir when he alleged he was readying to publish a list of homosexuals in parliament, aggrieved by what he said was a string of lies and name calling by members of the opposition New Patriotic party.
But according to Afotey Agbo, also known as Lion, the National Assembly is an august house which does not have to be associated with such inhumane activities. He therefore says the matter should be investigated and dealt with and if found as mere allegations, the ‘fabricator’ be brought to book.
While denying any involvement in homosexuality and disassociating himself from the allegations, Nii Laryea stated that “such allegations should not be made against the Legislative body of a sovereign state.”
The Minister of State was speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show with host Adakabre Frimpong Manso on Thursday.
He described Derrick Adjei’s allegations as regrettable and challenged him to disclose the ‘so called’ list and back it with evidence before making further comments on the subject.
The Kpone Katamanso MP said he abhorred homosexuality and cannot imagine an intimate relationship with a man knowing well the difference between the sexes.
“Listen, this is not good for Ghana’s parliament, so me, I suggest we investigate to get the truth in this matter,” he said.
Nii Laryea decried what he said was the deteriorating levels of Ghana’s politics, saying it is unfortunate to waste time on such trivial issues when there are more pertinent issues the nation should be discussing to promote development.
He said President Mills' administration is focused on fulfilling the developmental promises it made to electorates and need all energies to be concentrated on achieving the objective.
Asked if there is anything wrong with a member of parliament being gay, Nii Laryea said though alternative sexual preferences are accepted in some Western countries, the practice is frowned upon in Ghana and should not be accepted in anyway.
In a related development, the MP for Asikuma Odoben Brakwa, P.C. Appiah Ofori, has also rubbished the allegations of Derrick Adjei and has asked the Privileges Committee of the House to invite him to clarify the allegations.
The MP said the assertion that the alleged gay MP’s belong to the minority caucus is scandalous adding that the Deputy Youth Coordinator should be called to order.
“Look, me, no one can claim I am gay. I am not even a womanizer so how can I be gay?” the MP asked.
Derrick Adjei’s allegations have taken centre stage in media discussions and although he has refused to withdraw his allegations he claims he has withheld the publication of the so-called list after what he said are overtures made to him to stop it.
