The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, says the Minority Caucus will maintain firm pressure on Parliament until the correspondence declaring the Kpandai parliamentary seat vacant is formally rescinded.
Mr Assafuah expressed disbelief over what he views as an abrupt reversal by the Speaker of Parliament. He argued that instructing the Clerk to notify the Electoral Commission (EC) contradicts a previous ruling delivered by the Speaker on the same matter.
“There will be continuous and lawful resistance throughout the week,” he said. “We believe in constitutional supremacy and democratic governance. So it is surprising that the Speaker would direct the Clerk to write to the EC when it clearly conflicts with his earlier ruling. The Minority will continue this resistance for a week or two if necessary, until our concerns are heard. We will not cooperate with government business under these circumstances.”
Before the Speaker’s ruling, the Minority had pushed for an adjournment after several hours of debate.
Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, insisted that no government activity in the House would proceed until the Kpandai issue was settled.
The Speaker, however, put the matter to a voice vote and allowed proceedings to continue, prompting loud chants and repeated disruptions from the Minority side as they attempted to halt parliamentary business.
