The Member of Parliament for Kumbungu on Tuesday rode a bicycle to Parliament to register his displeasure over the high cost of fuel in the country.

Ras Mubarak left his Toyota Landcruiser V8 vehicle at home and embarked on the entire 17 kilometres to Parliament on a bicycle in a bid to draw government’s attention to the plight of Ghanaians.

“I did that with the view to highlight the concerns that have been raised by constituents, ordinary Ghanaians who are feeling the burning injustices of our society. Who are struggling to get by, the taxi drivers who are complaining about their inability to make sales, the market women and men, the barbers…it was to highlight their plight.

“We have never seen the kinds of job losses the kinds of things we're seeing today where businesses are going bust, companies are collapsing people are struggling. I have seen people who cannot even raise ¢100 to buy medication. I have seen people who are working but their salaries cannot take them to the 15^th of the month,” he said.

According to him, other Minority members will also ride bicycles to work if the Akufo-Addo-led administration does not do anything about the situation.

But the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, is unimpressed with the MP describing his actions as populist. 

Although he admits that fuel prices are high, he said government cannot be blamed for it.

“…unfortunately what is even happening cannot be blamed on government, when you know the truth and you want to play to the gallery, it is cheap populism,” the Suame MP said.

Mr Mubarak disagrees with the Majority Leader. He said the comment is unfortunate and is an attack on spare part dealers, and ‘trotro’ drivers who cannot make sales.

“Because he is saying that their condition in nonexistent,” he said.

Mr Mubarak, however, abandoned the bicycle and took an Uber home because it threatened to rain.

In a response to how long his protest will be for, the MP said “I am a lifetime activist. I am a tireless champion of equal rights, justice and opportunity for Ghanaians and if government continues to put Ghanaians through these burning injustices, then I will have cause to demonstrate civil disobedience.”
