The Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare says the numerous allegations made against him by some colleagues who appeared before the Parliamentary committee probing an alleged leaked tape have left his family in distress.

Appearing before the committee for the first time since the hearing began, Mr. Dampare described the actions of his colleagues and his subsequent call to testify as unfair.

“They came and made all these allegations in order to cover up probably the shame associated with what they have gotten themselves involved in in the first place and I, an innocent person focusing on my job, working in consent with my team and all commands across the country to keep the country safe have been asked to come and answer to these allegations which are just wild and baseless and I say to myself, this is not fair,” he said on Tuesday, September 12.

His comment follows an earlier assertion by the former Director-General (Technical) of the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah, that the current IGP is the worst ever in the history of the country.

Again, COP Mensah stressed that morale within the Ghana Police Service was low due to the management style of the IGP and his resolution not to include others in decision-making.

He also alleged that Mr. Dampare was behind the recording of the leaked tape being investigated by Parliament.

But responding to these claims, IGP George Dampare said the “wild allegations made without a shred of evidence" have caused significant pain to his wife and children.

He said he had a good working relationship with all the senior police officers who have appeared before the committee as witness, hence his surprise that the three could make up falsehoods to tarnish his image.

“George is my big brother, Gyebi is my kid brother, Asare is my brother. We have been together for long and George knows that since I entered the Police Service till today, I call his wife my mom and that will never change.

"And Gyebi, my kid brother, when I became the Inspector General of Police, I called him and offered him the position of Director of Cybercrime. My brother, Asare has gone through the whole process at various places and by the time I came he was still at the position of where he is today and this is how I have co-existed with all of them and as you can see from behind, all my management teams are here because that is how we do our thing.

"Then all of a sudden this matter came up and the matter was about finding out what has happened and who said what and where it came from and my brothers were given an opportunity to come and speak and they did speak and make the indication that they are involved in what was happening.

"But instead of them focusing on that, they came up with wild allegations that touch my person, the police leadership and the entire Police Service.

"Those wild allegations without a shred of evidence have brought a lot of pain to myself, my family especially my wife and children who are so patriotic because we believe in what we call pan-Ghanaianism,“ he added.

The parliamentary committee is conducting an investigation into a leaked audio recording involving discussions about the possible removal of the IGP by three police officers namely Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr. George Alex Mensah, Superintendent Mr. Emmanuel Eric Gyebi, and Superintendent Mr. George Lysander Asare and the former Northern Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu.
