The Northern Regional Minister, Adolf John Ali, says diplomat and visual artist Ibrahim Mahama, along with the Regional Police Commander, are scheduled to meet with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) today regarding an ongoing investigation into his alleged assault case.
The Minister emphasised the region's commitment to ensuring justice is served, stating that the meeting is part of the investigative process.
Ghanaian diplomat and artist Ibrahim Mahama was allegedly assaulted by a group believed to be part of the Ghana Police Service's Special Operations Team on 21 March 2026.
Mr Ibrahim Mahama held a press conference on 23 March 2026, highlighting the injuries he and his uncle had sustained.
He also talked of his intention to pursue the matter in Court.
Mr Mahama also called for justice for himself and others involved in an alleged similar assault.
He further called for the disbandment of the black Maria team.
However, the Special Operations Team has denied involvement, according to their commander, DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil.
But speaking to the media in Tamale, the Northern Regional Minister said as Chairman of the Regional Security Committee, he will ensure justice is served.
"We noticed that he had a broken tooth and broken lip, and I stood with him for some time, and I told the medical doctor to do everything possible to take good care of our brother because, first, he is a Ghanaian, it's my duty to protect every Ghanaian in the region as the regional chairman. Secondly, he is one of the few diplomats we as a region boast of, and so we care so much, " the Minister said
He said the Regional Commander continues to report to him daily on the development.
Responding to Mr Mahama's alleged assault and the potential to escalate into a larger debate as seen on social media, with possible ties to politics and chieftaincy sentiments being churned out.
The Regional Minister said that as Chairman of the Regional Security Council, they have assured him that an investigation would be conducted devoid of any leniency.
"We are not bringing any sect into the issue, be it chieftency or political," the Minister said. "If it's found that Jalil didn't behave well, in fact, he should know that he is a police officer.
"I'm here as the Regional Minister and the Chairman of the Regional Security Council," the Minister said. "If he is found guilty of the allegations after the IGP's investigations, the IGP would recommend what should happen."
