Former First Lady and President of the 31st December Women’s Movement (DWM), Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings on Saturday brought great joy to victims of the recent floods at Agona Swedru and its outlying areas when she presented a huge consignment of relief items to them. Nana Konadu, who is also a Vice-Chairperson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), visited the disaster zones and was shocked at the level of devastation the floods caused when she saw the extent of damage, especially that of the collapsed bridge, which has cut Swedru into two. Victims of the floods were beneficiaries of several bags of rice, student mattresses and bales of second hand clothing. Accompanied by DWM Deputy General Secretary, Victoria Kumah Mintah, 2008 NDC Parliamentary candidate for Central Ayawaso, Dr Kwesi Ofei Agyeman, Agona West Chairman of the NDC, Emmanuel Lincoln, Greater Accra DWM Coordinator Hajia Andalatu Bonsu and a host of NDC and DWM officials, Mrs Rawlings toured various areas including Selorm Camp, Town Hall Camp, Zabon Zongo, Agona Nyakrom, Agona Nsaba, Domoki/Brahabokon and Nkobeasi. Commiserating with the victims at the various locations, Mrs Agyeman-Rawlings said when the disaster struck she was occupied by a hectic travel and work schedule but following repeated SOS calls from various people in the affected areas, she quickly organised the executives of the DWM with the support of her husband to mobilise some relief items. Nana Konadu said the level of damage caused by the floods saddened her and consoled victims for their loss. She also counseled them to desist from constructing their houses and shops close to waterways as that leads to unfortunate disasters. She called for public-spirited approach to prevent illegal construction along waterways cautioning that failure to point out the faults of others eventually affects the either community. The former First Lady called for an even distribution of the donated items to prevent division and acrimony amongst victims. At Agona Nyakrom Nana Konadu joined the chiefs, clergy and people of the town as they held a service in memory of the victims of the flood disaster.
