Government has announced the expansion of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to cover four major mental health conditions: Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, and Schizophrenia.
This new benefit package to improve mental health care accessibility will take effect on November 1, 2024.
NHIS subscribers will now be able to access outpatient services and initial hospitalisation for these conditions at any NHIS-accredited facility.
However, specialised mental health hospitals - such as the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital, and Pantang Psychiatric Hospital - will continue to offer these services free of charge.
This initiative aims to bridge the mental health care gap in Ghana, where only a handful of specialised mental health hospitals exist, complemented by psychiatric units in some general hospitals.
By including mental health services under NHIS, the government is addressing geographical and financial barriers, ensuring that critical mental health services are more readily available to Ghanaians.
Improving Access and Early Diagnosis
Incorporating mental health care into the NHIS is part of a larger strategy to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Ghana.
The NHIS expansion encourages early diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues, helping to prevent the escalation of mild or moderate psychological disorders—such as stress, anxiety, and depression—into more severe conditions.
The initiative also aims to combat the stigma surrounding mental illness, which often prevents people from seeking care.
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) highlighted that the stigma associated with mental illness is a significant barrier to care.
Many individuals avoid seeking treatment at specialised mental health facilities due to fear of being judged or because care at private facilities is unaffordable.
The inclusion of mental health services in the general healthcare system through NHIS aims to break down these barriers and integrate mental health care into mainstream healthcare.
Recent NHIS Enhancements
The expansion of mental health services under NHIS is part of a broader effort to enhance the scheme’s benefits.
In the past year, the NHIS has introduced several important additions, including family planning services, dialysis, and coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of four childhood cancers - Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, Burkitt Lymphoma, Retinoblastoma, and Wilms Tumour, which account for about 60% of childhood cancers in the country.
Additionally, the NHIA has introduced free annual health screenings for all Ghanaians aged 18 and above, further promoting prevention and early detection as a cornerstone of healthcare.
The NHIA remains committed to continually improving the NHIS, aligning with the government’s vision for a comprehensive healthcare system that ensures no Ghanaian is left behind.
