In his virtual interview with Myjoynline, one of Ghana’s most influential national media platforms, the Nigerian design and construction professional, James Olaonipekun Toyin, encourages Africa to challenge the global construction industry.
He spoke on theme“Innovating for a Sustainable Future: Digital Transformation and Green Building Standards in Africa’s Construction Industry” during a Myjoyonline programme in October.
Mr Toyin used the occasion to highlight the urgent need for Africa to embrace digital innovations and sustainable building practices as the continent navigates rapid urbanisation and infrastructure growth.
He stressed that “technology-driven solutions and green building standards are no longer optional, they are the foundations of resilient and future-ready infrastructure in Africa.”
Mr Toyin’s career had already established him as a thought leader in the built environment. His academic path began with a National Diploma in Building Technology from Kwara State Polytechnic, followed by a Bachelor’s degree in Building Technology at the Federal University of Technology, Akure.
He is currently pursuing advanced studies in Construction Management at the Durban University of Technology, South Africa.
Toyin has led and delivered several transformative projects, including the University of Ilorin’s water treatment plant expansion under the Needs Assessment Project, Proposed office development for Zenith Bank PLC. Each of these projects reflected his ability to marry technical expertise with innovative execution, setting new benchmarks for quality and sustainability in Nigerian construction.
During the discussion, Toyin outlined a compelling vision for Africa’s infrastructure. He advocated for the local adoption of global green building standards such as LEED and EDGE, adapted to Africa’s unique socio-economic and climatic contexts. He also emphasised the transformative potential of digital tools like BIM, which streamline design, reduce costs, and enhance project sustainability.
The interview concluded with a resounding message: Africa’s construction future depends on innovative leadership, digital transformation, and sustainable building standards. Through his academic rigor, professional excellence, and international recognition, James Olaonipekun Toyin has positioned himself as a central figure in advancing that future.
