For the second time in month, the Tema Regional Police Command has arrested a notorious highway robber who managed to run away during a fierce gun battle between the police and his gang on the Accra-Tema Motorway, some few weeks ago.
The shootout led to the death of one of the robbers.
The robber, Mohammed Seidu, who was said to be a member of the gang of four who engaged the police patrol team in a gun battle, was arrested as his hideout, somewhere in Zongo, a suburb of Ashaima. His colleagues, Munkaila Yaya, Issifu Musah and Charles Dikro, were also arrested.
The police got a tip-off the Mohammed Seidu was receiving treatment at a hideout in Ashaiman and quickly, dispatched to the location to arrest him.
ACP Gyenning, briefing newsmen in his office at the regional headquarters, noted that investigations revealed that on July 14, 2010, Mohammed Seidu met with his accomplices and conspired to rob passengers and drivers on the Tema-Accra motorway. He continued that upon a tip-off the police moved into that area and after some time, found the robbers who were said to have robbed some passengers of their monies and other valuable items.
He explained that on the police's arrival, the robbers started shooting at the patrol team, compelling them to fire back and killing one of the robber's in the process while the rest fled the scene.
ACP Gyenning noted that after appealing to the general public to volunteer information on the robbers, and also sending information to all the hospitals and medical facilities to report any who visited their facilities with strange wounds for treatment, police later received information that one of the robbers, who they suspected had sustained gunshot wounds during the shootout, was receiving treatment at a hideout in Ashaiman.
According to him, he quickly deployed his men to the hideout and managed to apprehend the escapee robber, together with the three other colleagues, adding that they refused to reveal their ages and other information about them.
ACP Gyenning cautioned the general public as well as passengers to be wary of Such robbers who hide in the bushes along the motorway, and also petitioned the public as well as the media to help the Police fight against perpetrators of criminal activities in the metropolis and beyond.
He indicated that the four arrested suspected robbers will be arraigned before a court in Tema to stand trial of the charges which will be preferred against them. He also congratulated the general public for keeping the police informed of suspicious activities, which he said will go a long way to assist in curbing crime in the Tema Metropolis and its environs.
