A social commentator, Mr Randy Abbey, has taken a swipe at the party’s national executive for running its affairs as though it were "child's play".
Mr Abbey noted that this, among other little blunders, rearing its head in the party, will create a lot of problems for the executives and the party.
Much to the chagrin of many, the party recently issued a fiat banning all Members of Parliament (MPs) from openly supporting any presidential candidate.
“When you open nominations and you say that the contest is opened, all guidelines about the contest must be made public,” he remarked.
“[MPs like Dominic Ntiwul and Isaac Asiamah who have been speaking for the party publicly], it is today that you are telling them that something like that exist. I mean this is a kindergarten story, with all due respect, this is not a child's play, it’s a serious business.”
He chastised the executive for what could be described as double standard, because, to him, all of them have their preferences except a few who swing both sides.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Mr Abbey, who is also well known in football circles, was appalled that few months after their election, the executive are exhibiting signs of incompetence as if “they don’t know their whereabouts”, a “worrying” development he fears may cost the party fortunes in the 2012 national elections.
Enumerating some of the bedeviling problems, he said their first test of appointing deputies to national officers was poorly handled, which was eventually marred by the debate on whether to elect a flag-bearer before appointing those people.
He also noted the very day the announcement of a date for the election of presidential candidate was made, the same day the party opened nominations. And the nominations were opened without any clear guidelines for the election or how much was the filing fees. “Did it make sense to you,” he asked, rather rhetorically.
He reiterated that the issue of MPs not taking part in the election was alien to the NPP. Perhaps the party was trying to replicate what the ruling NDC did in the run-up to the election of then candidate Mills where MPs with official party position were asked to resign.
“But to say the MPs should not talk at all is an infringement on their right.”
For instance he posited: “Isaac Osei, is he not an MP, is he not contesting himself? What are you going to ask him to do? So an MP can decide to contest but an MP cannot support a candidate, does it make sense?”
Randy Abbey has, therefore, advised them to “think through what they do” in what he says is “their major test” to elect NPP's flag-bearer for the 2012 presidential election.
