The head of the National Service Secretariat has challenged aggrieved workers to make a complaint to the National Labour Commission and the Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) if they feel hard done by the decision of the secretariat for them to farm.
According to Vincent Kuagbenu, the workers most of who are civil servants have a core duty to farm because they are beneficiaries of the farm proceeds.
A number of the workers were Wednesday taken to the farm at Haatso, a suburb of Accra, and were made to weed, feed pigs and clean the farm area.
The studio of Joy FM was inundated with calls from some of the workers who believe their rights have been infringed upon.
But Speaking to Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, host of Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, Mr Kuagbenu said the workers have no right to complain, much less to a radio station, because they are beneficiaries of proceeds from the farm.
For a secretariat seeking to post service personnel into farms, Mr Kuagbenu said they must lead by example.
“Who should go to the farm and who should not go? He quizzed
“…the proceeds of the farm are sold to the workers of National Service Secretariat at subsided rates.
“In Easter as many workers from the Headquarters went to the farm to buy poultry at a very subsidized rate because they are workers there. What is wrong when one day we all go to the farm and clean the farm?" he said.
Asked how the workers felt about it, Mr Kuagbenu said “they are happy with it.”
He said workers who feel their rights have been trampled upon can seek justice at the Labour Commission or the Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).
He implored workers to exhaust internal mechanism in resolving issues.
But the of the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress Mr Kofi Asamoah said the management of NSS must proceed cautiously.
He said there must be enough consultation with the workers before any such policy is implemented.
