Vice President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Fred Kwashie Awuttey, says Ghana’s economy is showing signs of stability but has not fully recovered from the recent downturn.
He insisted that more work is required to strengthen the country’s economic position.
Speaking during a discussion on the 2026 mid-year budget on JoyNews' Newsfile, Mr. Awuttey commended the Finance Minister’s focus on fiscal discipline, noting that the decision to prioritise prudence over excessive spending reflects an attempt to restore stability.
He said the minister’s approach was expected, given his background as a chartered accountant, arguing that accountants typically focus on maintaining financial discipline and ensuring resources are managed efficiently.
However, he cautioned that fiscal discipline alone does not mean the economy has completely turned the corner.
“The minister said we are out of the woods, but I don’t think we are still at the borderline, looking at the way the numbers are showing and the statistics are going. It means there is more work to be done,” he said on Saturday.
Mr. Awuttey expressed concern about government’s revenue performance, stressing that weak revenue mobilisation could undermine efforts to sustain economic recovery.
According to him, the key question following the budget presentation is whether Ghana has truly recovered from the economic challenges it faced.
He added that while government’s commitment to spending within available resources is important, improving revenue generation and strengthening economic fundamentals must remain a priority.
