The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has called on the government to implement the conditions of service previously negotiated with the association.
This appeal was made during the 2025 International Day of Midwives Symposium, held in the Ashanti Region under the theme "Midwives: Critical in Every Crisis."
The GRNMA expressed deep concern that the agreed-upon service conditions have still not been implemented.
Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Association, Jones Afriyie-Anto, stressed that enforcing these conditions is essential to motivate the small number of midwives currently working in hospitals across the country.
Speaking at the symposium, he noted that limited employment opportunities and poor working conditions have compelled many trained midwives and skilled nurses to seek employment abroad.
Mr Afriyie-Anto further lamented the plight of midwifery trainees, pointing out that many who completed their training in 2021 are still unemployed.
“These are numbers the government could employ to help boost the workforce,” he said, adding, "And let me tell you, the number of midwives who have left because of the poor conditions is also alarming.”
He warned that the continued loss of skilled personnel significantly increases the burden on the few remaining healthcare workers and adversely affects patient care.
Also speaking at the event, the Principal of Kokofu Nursing Training College, Joyce Gifty-Otchere highlighted a critical shortage of laboratory equipment and training materials.
She urged the government to invest in nursing and midwifery training institutions by providing essential resources and improving accommodation for staff and students.
“The government should help us obtain proper mannequins and well-equipped resource laboratories,” she stated. “This would allow us to simulate real-life situations, giving students practical experience and better preparing them for the field.”
