The Winneba Police have arrested one more person in connection with the alleged stealing of quantities of Copper Cables, costing 850.00 Ghana Cedis, which belongs to the Winneba branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The Winneba Police gave his name as Bashiru Moro, from Akwatia in the Eastern Region but currently residing in Winneba; bringing the number of the people so far arrested in connection with the case to three. The first two, arrested on Wednesday are Haruna Karimu, 26, and Francis Kow Mensah Yaw, aged 28. A spokesman for the Winneba Police, briefing newsmen at Winneba on Wednesday, said the two suspects are friends staying together near Don Bosco Catholic Junior Secondary School, suburb of Winneba. The spokesman said on May 9 this year, at about 0700 hours, a 'good Samaritan' whose name is being withheld for security reasons, saw Karimu putting a big and heavy fertilizer sack in a taxi, which later headed towards the Winneba Junction. According to him, the informant who suspected foul play in the movement of Karimu also picked a taxi to chase him to the Junction and saw Karimu standing near the sack, waiting for transport to convey the items to an unknown destination. The Police said the informant raised the alarm and with the help of some people around, the suspect was apprehended, and when the bag was opened large quantity of Copper Cables were found concealed in it. The people arrested Karimu and handed him and the cables over to the Winneba police, and during investigations, his room was searched and some sharp implements including cutters, scull drivers, hand gloves, testers, and six television sets were found. Karimu later mentioned Yaw as his accomplice and both claimed ownership of the items found in the room. According to the police during further interrogations by the investigators, they mentioned BashiruMoro as an accomplice, and so the police have been on the lookout for him and have succeeded in arresting. The suspects would be arraigned before court after investigation. Mr Isaac Botchway, Winneba Area Manager of ECG in an interview with the newsmen said within the past seven days, a total of over 400 yards of service Copper Cables estimated at 3,937.00 Ghana Cedis have been stolen from the Low cost, Ghana Highways, Water Works, Sankro, Gyatekrom areas and Community Nurses Training School in the Municipality. Mr Botchway said his out-fit has requested for some of the cables from Cape Coast, ECG Regional Headquarters to restore power to the affected people. He appealed to the public to report suspected persons found around service electrical poles to the Police or the Company in Winneba, to help reduce the rampant stealing of electrical cables in the Municipality.Source: GNA
