Former Presidential Spokesperson Mahama Ayariga says he hopes to cooperate with his superiors to ensure better trade between Ghana and its trading partners. This follows Parliament’s approval of his nomination as Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry on Friday. Mr Ayariga’s approval stalled for a while as the Appointments Committee deferred a decision on him to consider allegation against him that he unfairly acquired tractors. The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) cleared Mr Ayariga of any wrongdoing in the case in question but members of the committee said the delay was necessary to verify the authenticity of the document clearing him. The committee approved Mr Ayariga’s nomination earlier this week and Parliament today gave him the nod to head for the Trade Ministry. Fair treatment Although Mr Ayariga has successfully passed through the mill, he says he was not fairly treated. According to him, public reaction to the Privileges Committee’s decision to delay his approval pointed to the fact that he was unfairly treated. Mr Ayariga said although some members, during his vetting, asked the right questions, others pushed to find fault even when there was none. “I can assure you that I was trying very hard to be respectful to members of the committee… I was being very economical with some of the answers because they were quite straightforward issues and I could see people just trying to find faults where there was none and so for me part of my attitude there was more of being respectful…” Mr Ayariga said.
