The Ghana Police Service has beefed up security in the Ashanti and Central regions as it deploys personnel to maintain law and order before, during and after the Christmas festive period.

In the Ashanti Region, the Regional Police Command has taken steps to strengthen security in the region ahead of the Christmas festivities.

Commissioner of Police (COP) Ken Yeboah, the Regional Commander, announced that 4,200 officers and men were being deployed to ensure strong presence on the streets to prevent miscreants from having their way.

They are from the Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT), Rapid Deployment Force, Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and other divisions.

COP Yeboah said they would be on hand at social gatherings - conventions, entertainment centres and drinking spots.

He reminded the officers and men to ensure a high level of professionalism and warned that any act of misconduct would not be accepted.

He added that no one would be allowed to create image problems for the police service.

He advised them to be civil in their dealings with the public and to respect the human rights of arrested suspects – they should not be manhandled.

COP Yeboah called for the people to show a good understanding and to cooperate with the police to make society safe for everybody.

They should be bold to flag up suspected criminals and provide credible information to track down and bring those who had chosen to live outside the law.

He repeated the ban on the use of firecrackers and asked all to comply to avoid running into trouble with the law.

He indicated that those who engaged in the sale of the firecrackers, bought and used these would be arrested.

The Regional Commander cautioned against the use of unregistered motorbikes and vehicles after 1800 hours and said offenders would be prosecuted.

The officers and men later went through the streets in what they called “Operation show of force,” to assure the public of their readiness.

Central Regional Police deploy 1,450 men ahead of yuletide and New Year

Also in the Central Region, Police on Wednesday deployed 1,450 police personnel to beef up security before, during and after the Christmas festive period.

The Command has said the Police presence would be evident everywhere to offer help and prevent criminal activities from undermining public peace.

Commissioner of Police (COP) Reverend David Nenyi Ampah-Bennin, the Central Regional Police Commander, said this at Cape Coast during a press briefing on the regional policing strategies  being rolled out to maintain law and order before, during and after the Yuletide

He said day-and-night patrols have been set in motion to bring community policing to the doorsteps of the citizenry in the region.

The Regional Commander said that Police presence has been strengthened at all sensitive social gatherings and security installations including the University of Cape Coast (UCC), commercial streets, entertainment centres and strategic residential areas with adequate patrolling to ensure that law and order were not breached.

He said the Police was well aware of increased activities of social miscreants during such festive occasions, and that, there were several security concerns, including robberies on highways, streets and residential areas but "we are equal to the task."

COP Ampah-Bennin also mentioned burglaries, theft, fraud, pickpocketing, traffic congestion and the unlawful use of firecrackers, which caused fear, panic and injuries, as issues of public concern that would not be tolerated by the Command

On road traffic challenge, he said the Regional Police Command had intensified patrol, particularly on highways in anticipation of increased highway crimes and indiscipline during the Christmas festivities.

He urged drivers to obey road traffic regulations to avoid the punishments.

Later, he addressed a parade of security men and women who were urged to comport themselves wherever they may be posted as they displayed their weaponry skills and fitness as signs of readiness to defend the land.

"As police officers, you must exhibit a high level of professionalism in the performance of your duties to win public confidence and support for them to volunteer timely information to enhance your work."

He appealed to the public to volunteer information about robbers to enable the Police to clamp down on such activities.
