A coalition of civil society groups is accusing the police of assault and unwarranted arrests during a demonstration in Accra Wednesday.
The group, comprising some Convention People's Party (CPP) youth, members of the Socialist Forum and the All African Revolutionary Party were demonstrating against NATO’s invasion of Libya.
Spokesperson for the group, Ernesto Yeboah, alleged some of the protesters were injured.
“Some of them are injured, some of them have been arrested, close to 80 of us, because the police that engulfed us were so many. Slapping some of us, firing tear gas here and there,” he alleged.
But Acting Director of Public Affairs at the Ghana Police Service, DSP Cephas Arthur, told Joy News the group defied a court order against the demonstration.
“The police went to court to seek prohibition order which was granted and they were duly served.
“So the police thought that was the end of it, only for the police to hear today that the group is embarking on a demonstration and because the police were on stand-by they mobilized men to quell it,” DSP Arthur explained
