The newly appointed Interior Minister, Dr. Addo-Kufuor has instructed all policemen to display their service numbers and name tags in two weeks.
This is part of measures to salvage the seeming sinking image of the Police Service.
“Without your service numbers and name tags displayed, how can you be distinguished from criminals” he asked.
Dr. Addo Kufuor was speaking at a meeting with the leadership of the police to try and restore public trust in the police.
The police have come under intense criticism relating to their handling of violent situations such as the Bawku crisis and the Ashaiman riots.
Particularly accounting for the Services’ sunken image is the loss of cocaine from police custody.
To cure the increasing negative perception about the police, Dr. Addo Kufuor met with the leadership of the service in Accra on Wednesday.
He advised policemen to expose bad nuts in the service in order to preserve its sanctity.
On accommodation for the police the minister said an arrangement had been made to provide policemen with 200 flats in Accra and fifty in Kumasi.
He said efforts were being made to secure accommodation for policemen in all the ten regional capitals.
