The Bono Regional Police Command has commenced investigations into the fire that claimed the lives of a couple at Asuakwa, a suburb of the Sunyani East Municipality.
In a statement released today, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, Public Relations Officer for the Bono Regional Police Command, said police received a distress call on October 20 and rushed to the scene, where personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service were already battling the blaze.
The devastating incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 19, during a heavy downpour that swept through parts of Sunyani.
The victims, identified as Nana Ameyaw Ampofo, 65, and Grace Adu Boafoawaa, 49, were found burnt beyond recognition. A crime scene management team assessed the site and confirmed that the building and its contents had been completely destroyed.
Two bodies were recovered from the kitchen area, while a Toyota Highlander and a pickup vehicle parked nearby were partially damaged.
“We are working closely with the Ghana National Fire Service to determine the cause of this tragic fire and will provide updates as the investigation progresses,” the statement said.
The statement added that the bodies of the deceased have been conveyed to the Sunyani Teaching Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The Bono Regional Police Command assured the public that authorities are committed to a thorough investigation and will keep the community informed of any developments.
