Police at Konongo in the Ashanti Region are calling for enforcement of a law to ban heavy duty trucks from moving at night on the main Kumasi-Accra Highway.
Divisional MTTU Commander, ASP Augustine Kwaku Mensah has told Nhyira News this is one of the most effective ways to stop the carnage on the roods.
He said records indicate that majority of accidents on the roads occur between 6 p.m and 6 a.m., a situation he attributes to fatigue, among other factors.
The call comes a few days after an articulator truck ran into a Tata bus at Ohene Nkwanta near Konongo, killing six people including a four-month old baby.
Three people who sustained serious injuries have been transferred from the Konongo-Odumase Hospital to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. Other injured victims were treated and discharged.
Police preliminary investigations have established that the articulator driver, identified only as Muntari, was dosing at the time of the accident at about 3:30a.m. last Wednesday.
He veered into the lane of the Kumasi-bound bus, whose driver tried in vain to avoid the crash.
ASP Mensah said the impact of the accident was so strong some victims and parts of the Tata bus were retrieved about 50 meters away from the spot.
"Even the seat on which the passengers were sitting, we saw some of the seats scattered over the place. The four dead bodies we found at the scene were not in the vehicle, they were scattered around the place because the impact was so great, the driver was over speeding."
According to him majority of accidents on the Kumasi-Accra road are avoidable.
"Some of these accidents should have been avoided, most of them, especially this one and many others but the drivers are careless, sometimes they are very tired but they won’t sleep and some of them are too overloaded" he said.
ASP Mensah warned that driving on the Kumasi-Accra road especially at the Konongo-Breku stretch of the road has become so dangerous as a result of indiscipline on the part of drivers of heavy duty trucks.
"Some of the drivers on this Kumasi road, the way they drive especially articulator trucks and heavy duty trucks, is too dangerous to human life. What we are experiencing on this road is an indication that most of the accidents happen in the night."
The Divisional MTTU Commander chastised drivers of heavy duty trucks for their disrespect for other road users, a situation he said is contributing to road accidents.
He warned that the police will not sit down unconcerned for what he described as gross indiscipline on our highways to continue.
"What we have observed is that the heavy duty trucks especially articulator trucks, the buses... and other heavy trucks don’t have regard for other road users especially taxis, private cars and other small, small vehicles. They sometimes overtake vehicles even in curves and they do all these things and they cause accidents".
Meanwhile, the National Road Safety Commission is alarmed by the spate of road accidents on the highways.
Regional Coordinator, Kwaku Oware Boateng who visited the accident scene said drivers should take personal safety programmes. According to him, drivers should rest when they are tired and also be abreast with weather patterns in order to safe lives.
